When we sell PVC resins, we also offer
sustainability solutions
Vinyl in Motion is Vestolit´s program aimed to advance post-industrial and post-consumer PVC waste recycling in Latin America.
We create solutions for the PVC circular economy, while we promote actions to create social, environmental, and economic value through the Vinyl´s circularity.
PVC helps solve the main challenges of the world
PVC resins can help solve many of the main global challenges. More than 2 billion people on our planet have no access to drinking water or sanitary systems. PVC pipes are a main sustainable solution to build aqueducts and sewers. PVC flooring, roofing, sidings, windows frames, and other construction applications have become high-quality solutions in the building and construction industry, where nearly 3 billion people lack decent housing. PVC performance and protectiveness have made it a critical material in such health care products and procedures as blood and intravenous bags, kidney dialysis and blood transfusions, cardiac catheters and endotracheal tubes and pill-packaging. These are just a few medical applications made of PVC that are essential to affordable modern medicines and treatments.
Vestolit, an Orbia business, is one of the largest PVC producers in the world. As an industry leader, Vestolit is committed to developing sustainable products and solutions. At Orbia we continued to advance in line with our commitment to mitigate climate change. We are proud to announce that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated our near-term targets to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 47% by 2030 (from a 2019 base year) and our Scope 3 GHG emissions from use of and end of life treatment of sold products by 30% within the same timeframe.
Alliances to strengthen the PVC chain
We take our responsibility seriously. For decades we are partner of VinylPlus, the European PVC industry’s voluntary commitment to sustainable development, the Vinyl Institute, a U.S. trade organization representing the leading manufacturers of vinyl, vinyl chloride monomer, and vinyl additives and modifiers, the Vinyl Institute of Canada, the authoritative voice for vinyl in Canada and the PLASTICS Industry Association, a US association that supports the entire plastics supply chain, and many others. We are also members of The Vinyl Sustainability Council (VSC), a voluntary membership organization in the US that is taking a leadership role in uniting the industry to advance sustainable performance throughout the vinyl value chain. The VSC launched +Vantage Vinyl™, a voluntary initiative to advance the U.S. vinyl industry’s contribution to sustainable development. The program is designed to verify the sustainability of the entire vinyl supply chain.
In Latin America, we take responsibility in setting up the Vinyl in Motion initiative.
When we sell high quality Vinyl Resins, we also offer a range of sustainability services to achieve our customer´s purpose.
As part of our portfolio, we have recently launched our Future-Fit PVC. The Future-Fit resins are an evolving portfolio of sustainable PVC solutions, ever-more effective at reducing carbon emissions associated with the production of high-quality resin. Today we offer bio- and bio-circular attributed resins using feedstocks from biological sources that are not in competition with food production.
To create a future that is fit for the next generation, we need a Future-Fit generation of PVC. We are the experts in Vinyl, offering options that can significantly reduce the final product´s carbon footprint. Our bio-attributed PVC resins reduce carbon
emissions more than 60% for emulsion grades and over 80% for suspension grade resins. Purchase orders for these products have been generated worldwide.
We create solutions for PVC circular economy, while we promote actions to create social, environmental, and economic value through the Vinyl´s circularity.
In Latin America, we have created the first initiative to advance circular economy actions aimed to recycle post-industrial and post-consumer PVC. Under the name of Vinyl in Motion, we transform PVC waste into resources for life. We support the development of recyclers and link our customers, end users, and value chain key players to create circular economy systems for recycled PVC integration into new products.
Vinyl in Motion began as a pilot program in Colombia. Today, it is recognized as an established customer-focused program, thanks to more than 3,000 tons of PVC waste transformed into new applications each year.
People, Profit, and Planet, three pillars of our strategy at Orbia, are positively impacted by Vinyl in Motion. Besides reducing the PVC´s environmental footprint due to benefits related to waste circularity; the program has created economies that help recyclers transform lives. This iniative has migrated from an informal economy to the creation of proper PVC recycling companies with Vestolit´s guidance. Just in Colombia alone, about 30,000 families live on picking recycling materials in the streets. Generally, they are under the poverty line, a reality that is seen in each Latin American country, as well as in Asia and Africa.
Social Value.
As a component of Vinyl in Motion, we have built VITA, a process focused specifically on creating social value through the circular economy. The project involves the selection and program enrollment of recyclers, identifying main areas to focus the recycling efforts with a goal to achieve – better quality of lifes.
In addition, VITA offers training to local people in areas such as finance, safety and environment, legal compliance, and workers’ wellness, among others, while strengthening Orbia´s sourcing process.
Transforming PVC waste into resources for life.
IV bags from hospitals and their production sites, artificial leather from shoes and clothing manufacturers, blister packs from pharmaceutical plants and post-consumer collection systems, and rigid applications such as pipes, windows frames from building projects and constructions warehouses, are the main PVC waste streams Vinyl in Motion is transforming into raw material for new applications. Vestolit has become Orbia´s cross-business provider of recycled PVC.
In Colombia, Alphagary has recently launched “Infinitude”, a portfolio of high-specification compounds formulated with up to 70 percent post-consumer recycled content supplied by the Vinyl in Motion program. These compounds meet the highest customers’ standards for manufacturing footwear soles, garden hoses, floor mats, wire jacketing, and automotive industrial applications, while providing eco-friendly options, that reuse waste intended initially for landfills.
Beyond borders
Vinyl in Motion will expand to Mexico and Brazil in 2024. Our long-term goal is to further expand throughout all of Latin America.
Orbia and Vestolit´s Purpose
We have many opportunities ahead to improve people´s lives through our products, services, and programs. Vinyl in Motion is part of our pursuit of better solutions for people and the planet´s main challenges. At Orbia, we advance life around the world.
