News.Trucks go on a diet

The environment and the protection of resources associated with it are important to the PVC manufacturer VESTOLIT, based at the Marl-Chemiepark. In the future, modern silo transporters acquired by the transport company Thier / Norbert Dentressangle will allow one in every twelve local journeys to be cut.

VESTOLIT Head of Logistics, Siegbert Kopecky (from left.), along with Jürgen and Jörn Thier (Spedition Thier / Norbert Dentressangle), introduce the new lightweight design HGVs and silo trailers. A unique advertising layout was developed in the course of the acquisition.

40 tons is the permitted gross weight limit for silo vehicles driven on German roads. How, then, can more of a product be transported to the customer in one journey? Very simple: the vehicle itself must be made lighter.

It is not only in production that processes are to be optimised, but also afterwards in the storage process. The logistics department of VESTOLIT can now record a considerable success that will lead to significant savings. In close cooperation with the Dorsten transport company Thier/Norbert Dentressangle, new silo trailers and tractors which are considerably lighter than normal vehicles were conceived.

"Up to 8% will be saved on weight", explains Siegbert Kopecky, Head of Logistics for the PVC manufacturer from Marl. "There is no longer a sleeping cabin in the new trucks and the silo trailers are missing some equipment that isn't needed for local journeys. The commitment shown by the transport company Norbert Dentressangle is exemplary." Due to the 8% saving made on the weight of vehicles, 27 tons can be transported instead of 25. "We are protecting the environment because we will cut back one in every twelve journeys and can therefore partly compensate for the rising costs of transport", are some of the considerable advantages mentioned by Kopecky.

In the course of the acquisition, a livery for the trailers was created by the marketing department and the advertising agency Comix Mediapool. "Good Prospects with PVC" can be seen in large letters on the silo and creates a fresh, modern and innovative "packaging" for PVC. The plastic film is needless to say made from PVC and is long-lasting.
